Too many who write about African music or culture, are people who parachute into Africa from western Europe or north America for a fortnight or a season with the calculated aim of gaining media fame and a title as "expert" after they have "studied" us. Many of these "experts" employ clever phrases and Phd vocabularies and mask shallow knowledge with this facade. Professor Ch�rif Keita; the author of OUTCAST TO AMBASSADOR; THE MUSICAL ODYSSEY OF SALIF KEITA, is the best person to have written this book about the Malian musician; Salif Keita. As a professor of literature; he is well aware of what it takes to write a gripping narrative. And he proved himself more than up to the task. But this book posed a special challenge, I thought, with the inclusion of esoteric, ethnographic details on the culture of the di�li and the donso interwoven into the storyline. Professor Keita is well up to the challenge and, this reader found that the flow of the narrative was not hindered in the least. Moreover, these details were germane to the story in explaining the singers life challenges and the motives behind his career decisions. Professor Ch�rif Keita & Salif Keita have been friends since they were both pre-teens. And they have been friends for more than five decades. As such, it is only someone like Professor Keita who could write about Salif with such intimate knowledge. It is only someone like him who could draw such an insightful psychological picture of the singer. Professor Keita and Salif Keita belong to the same culture. They are both from Mand� and share language, religion and scores of enumerable cultural traditions together. This very fact stamps an imprimatur of authenticity to the work. This reader finished the book in 3 days and highly recommends it. 5 stars.

Landscape - Patterns, Perception, and Process

I bought this book for a class about two years ago, it was a not required, but my professor suggested it in addition to our required text. After the semester ended, the course was reformatted, and this book was not being bought back. This book sat on the shelf with others I've kept, decided to buy, or also have been left with until about November.

I really wish we had used the book, I wish that I had read it earlier because some of the design principles raised by Bell have dramatically helped to improve my work. I haven't finished the book yet, but it has helped me greatly to understand my own designs to explain them to others, as well as to form a starting point with the idea that humans have certain native proportions, angles, shapes, colors, and patterns that are perceived as beautiful. These concepts are necessary when you are involved in landscape architecture, and I'm very glad I ended up using this book.

I have had this book for years, since just after it came out. I have known the author for many years and we published a book together: Designing Sustainable Forest Landscapes. The author, Simon Bell, is a leading thinker, researcher, and quite capable landscape architect who has spent his career trying to understand landscape patterns and processes and how these can be used in design and conservation. I have often dug into my copy to find references to issues that I am working with day to day, in the field of landscape ecology and aesthetics.

essential reading

For any Catholic attempting to make sense of the current auto-demolition in the Catholic Church, Randy Engel's monumental work, The Rite of Sodomy is absolutely essential.
Although I was familiar with Engel's previous work and had great respect for her integrity and research skills, for years I resisted her books on the sexual abuse crisis in the Church. It was just a case of too much information about a subject that threatened to destroy my faith.
In addition, the very title, containing as it does a word I had difficulty even speaking aloud, much less enshrine on my bookcase, put me off.
But eventually, with about the same enthusiasm I have for cleaning up a patient's vomitus, I purchased and read the books.
And now, I can tell you, read The Rite of Sodomy for yourself, buy more copies and give them to Bishops, especially volume V.
Ms. Engel has produced a scholarly work that documents the downfall of the Catholic Church. Her work is almost mind-numbingly detailed and researched and documented. The footnotes and bibliography and index are possibly more extensive than the text itself.
Even if you aren't a Catholic, The Rite of Sodomy will shed valuable light on the processes going on today that are using same sex attraction to wreck our country's culture and push us all a bit further along the road to tyranny.
The one thing Ms. Engel omitted and I hope will address in a future book, is the connection between the Vatican's surrender to sodomy and the Message of Fatima. According to many sources, the apostasy would begin at the top, and sins of impurity would be the major problem. Both of those point to the possibility that the plague of sodomy in the Church is a part of the chastisement for the Church's disobedience.
It's really a shame that this review has to come from me. I am not very good at these things, but Ms. Engel's work deserves to be more widely read, and by posting this, I hope that others will read her books if only just to refute my poor efforts. I hope someone will, if you do, you'll understand why she chose that title and why she has spent years documenting this phenomenon and its toxic effects on the Church and our culture.

So much research and effort has gone into this series! It definitely needed to be written and is so professionally done. Randy Engel has provided enough information for any investigations to be pursued. Hopefully the hierarchy will READ it.

A Highly Researched Series on the Sexual Abuse of Children in the Catholic Church.

This review pretty much includes the whole series. FIrst of all, especially the last two installments, volumes 4 and 5, the data that Ms. Engel writes about, can be found in the numerous files on www.Bishopaccountability.org. The only reason I offer that link is that Ms. Engels' books were completed in the mid-2000's when most of the sexual abuse cases she describes weren't adjudicated before it went to press. Most of the individual abuser priest, nuns and brothers she presented in her books are not new to the reader who has kept up on the abuse scandal on their own. What is new is the intransigence of the Vatican prior to and after the heyday of the abuse, primarily in the late 60's through the 80's. Also, the bishops, archbishops and cardinals who were keeping the proverbial lid on the abuse needed to be arrested for allowing the abuse to be hidden.

As far as the accusations of homosexuality in the papacy are concerned, I'm still not convinced that Pope Paul Vi was homosexual. His actions and behaviors certainly pointed to being homosexual, but he had never been caught in the act of sex with another male. Of course that in itself is no indication of him leading a homosexual lifestyle, but it would make the Catholic church's stand on homosexual relationships considerably arrogant.

I enjoyed (if that is the correct way of describing a book that has descriptive homosexual acts) the books, but I thought the data needs to be updated by Ms. Engel's. I also might point out that Ms. Engel's is not a drive by journalist who wanted to grind her sword on her thigh, to steal a verse from the Psalms, she is a highly respected journalist and a staunch Catholic supporter of the Pro-Life movement, and it shows in her writing of these books.

The year before I began working at Random House, I took a roadtrip with a friend from college. One night we spent sleeping under the stars on the side of the road, about one-hundred feet from the edge of the Grand Canyon. That night has stayed present for me. And so when I saw the deep desert reds and the striking blue sky of the cover of DESERT SOLITAIRE sitting in the office, I had no choice but to pick it up. Riding through the insides of Manhattan, tunneling through to work, I have been carrying this book with me. I keep closing my eyes and hearing the wolf call, the swish of the wind through the brush and seeing the great vast distances, feeling the heat of the day on my skin and the dry cool descent of desert night. In reading this book I am coming to a whole new understanding of the ecology of the desert west. Edward Abbey went alone to the desert as a seeker of a greater knowledge of himself, but also to dwell in a nature unfiltered, unpersonified, on its own terms. The desert is bigger than any of us, filled with intimate moments. This book will take you there.

Being there...

OK. To fully appreciate this accumulation of experiences and stories... you need to plan a trip to Southern Utah. ( Go during a "shoulder" season so you will not have too many crowds ). You really need to actually be there. To see the horizons and stirring landscapes. And you will need to let go of any preconceived attitudes about deserts - any requirements for 5-Star anything. Take this book along and read a few chapters each evening. And you will need to allow yourself enough time to just sit... listen.. and reflect. Visit Moab and the Arches N.P. and imagine how it once was not too long ago. Head off to Dead Horse Point and then down to the Needles area - both in Canyonlands N.P. If you can, camp for a night or two. Look for the La Sal Range on the eastern horizon. In this way, I think you will develop a better appreciation for Mr. Abbey's world. A couple of chapters might be considered a bit off point, but that's all part of the experience. So --- get the book, plan your adventure... and, if the Southwest is a new experience for you, I believe you will come back home with some remarkable impressions. All enhanced by "Desert Solitude".

Okay, sure, it was fun.

Alright, it's a classic. But, as I had kind of picked up from others who have written about him, Abbey was kind of filled with himself. Although, the anti-establishment group from the 1960's is pretty well represented in this time capsule, I don't like running into smart-than-thou park rangers, so some of the passages kind of rubbed me wrong. As for adventures, mostly spurred by leaping before looking, and a kind of hippie approach to being in the West, it's a romp of sorts. The thirty plant names mentioned over and over and over will certainly be burned into your brain by the time you finish. lol. Is it okay to think a classic is just okay? For what it's worth, I started Stegner next and am finding him slightly oblique. I guess I just find the wonders of the West wonderful, without writing about them in a mysterious, transcendental way. Even Muir, in his Scottish, time-context sensitive prose could paint a pretty good picture without getting too circumlocutory.

Read this to fill your soul

I heard about this book at a party and just the way people talked about it fascinated me! These guys are true wanderers and adventurers, not big readers, and they LOVED this book. I heard that it was hard to get into because it is a memoir by a man who moved to almost completely undeveloped National Park in the desert and fell in love with it and wrote about it. The incredible thing is, he turned out to be a prolific writer who loved his subject and expresses his love in such moving, lyrical yet unsentimental and masculine fashion that you can't help but fall in love too.

I am a huge annotator of books, and love to highlight and mark comments next to passages in all my books that I want to return to. The whole book is like that for me. Every sentence shows the rare, sublime mystery of shadows, lights, passing moments of a living and breathing planet that accepts and watches all who travel through, inviting them to delve into the secrets and profound truths that only the wilderness can teach us. Now more than ever, we need to remember why America is so unutterably fragile, beautiful and worth protecting.
