Surprisingly comprehensive

This surprisingly comprehensive little book addresses over 40 questions children would dream up about a slave's life...and a few they wouldn't. What did slaves wear? What did they eat? Would you live with your father and mother? What if your father belonged to another slave owner? Did the children have to work? What games did they play? Were any black people free? While the answers are by necessity simplified for the targeted age group (9-12) the content is honest and relatively thorough. I think this provides an excellent foundation for helping children understand this sad time in American history. Includes web and physical addresses of seven historic/interpretive sites.

Honestly answers some very difficult questions.

Young readers will come away from If you Lived When There Was Slavery in America with an I-was-there knowledge of the history and lives of slaves in America. Some of the information is especially interesting, since it comes directly from slave narratives or diaries. The story of Robert Glen's secret education from an owner's son and Emma Knight's report of sobbing in pain because of having no shoes in the freezing cold will stimulate genuine understanding, classroom discussion and a desire for further study.

I highly recommend this wonderful book.

This book is simply incredible! My daughter read this book and was fascinated by the details that helped her understand how people really lived during slavery times. This book sparked such an interest in understanding her history until she is constantly reading and requesting more information about the struggles of African Americans. The book also makes for good conversations and an understanding of how obstacles and the struggles are life should be used to motivate us to seek better things in life. As an African American mother, it is absolutely necessary that our children be given all the tools to survive. This book helps them understand the importance of making the best of any kind of situation that you are placed in and always striving for something better!

Dr. Samuel Dyer is the chairman of the board of the Medical Science Liaison Society and has over 15 years of international MSL experience. During his career, he has managed MSL teams and operations in over sixty countries across the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. He has facilitated the successful launch of pharmaceutical and medical device products for both Fortune 500 pharmaceutical companies and small biotechs. Dr. Dyer has coached, interviewed, and reviewed the CVs of countless MSL candidates. His insights and guidance have resulted in numerous candidates successfully breaking into their first MSL role. Dr. Dyer has written extensively on the Medical Science Liaison role, including numerous published articles, benchmark studies, and reports. He has also been a speaker at several global conferences presenting various MSL topics, including creating teams, management, global trends, and the metrics used to measure performance. Dr. Dyer has also been sought out as a consultant for a number of pharmaceutical and management consulting companies on MSL projects. Dr. Dyer has a Ph.D. in Health Sciences and did his medical training in Chicago. He has a Master’s Degree in Tropical Biology (where he studied in the Amazon) and has a B.S. in Biology. Dr. Dyer also completed a certificate program for Executive Leadership and Strategy in Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology at the Harvard Business School.

Invaluable resource for MSL Interviews

I ordered this book a day before my phone interview for an MSL position. I was worried if the book would be able to help me in such a short time, but it was a nice quick read and an invaluable resource. Once you start, its hard to put it down. I was very impressed with accuracy of the information presented, especially the phone screen / interview chapters. Majority of the questions I was asked during my interview were almost word for word from this book. So I was very happy that I had read it ahead of time and prepared the answers for the questions. I highly recommend this excellent book to anyone who is aspiring to be an MSL or even if you are already an MSL. It’s good to review some of these things as we talk to our KOLs. Thank you Dr. Dyer for your guidance.

The Medical Science Liaison Career Guide: How to Break into Your First Role is the ultimate how-to guide for people looking to join this relatively young profession. Dyer’s love of the MSL profession is evident just in the way he approaches this guide. This is the type of work that fulfills the mission of his organization (the MSL Society)—lifting up the profession globally—in a way that has a multiplier effect.

This work is the gift that has great potential to keep on giving, influencing generations of MSLs to come, as it’s squarely-aimed at helping superior talent from across the health spectrum break into critical roles at life sciences companies, with the opportunity to collaborate and guide relationships with key opinion leaders at regional, national, and global levels. He addresses PharmDs and research scientists specifically, people with his same background, who may be currently ignorant of the roles that MSLs play in bringing better health outcomes to patient populations (or even ignorant of the role’s existence).

About the Author
David Augsburger is the author of 20 books on pastoral counseling, marriage, conflict and human relations. He is a professor of pastoral counseling at Fuller Theological Seminary, and has also taught at seminaries in Chicago, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. For over a decade, he served as radio spokesperson for the Mennonite Churches, and he has written feature articles that have appeared in over 100 different periodicals. An ordained minister of the Mennonite Church and a diplomat of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, Augsburger leads workshops internationally.

A superb guide to working anger for Christians

David Augsburger, professor of pastoral care in a Christian seminary, helps Christian people to explore the nature of anger and a range of ways to work with this powerful emotion. He has created a very helpful chart that offers five different ways of moving toward resolution (when the time comes) each offering a range of caring and confronting. They include choosing my way, your way, no way, compromise, or creative effforts to discover our way. Augsburger explores how the Bible encourages both assertiveness and caring and helps the reader to find their own path, blending the two.

Free from the guilt of Confrontation

Execllent book! Growing up, I was under the impression that confrontation was a negative thing - that if I confronted a person about an issue then that meant I was a bad person for having poor or hurt feelings. After I read "Caring Enough to Confront" I understood that confrontation could acutally be a positive response to negative behavior. I highly reccommend this book for anyone suffering from the confrontation jitters.

This book really helps those of us at times that have had to confront and have felt guilty for doing so.
Caring and confronting together provide the balance of Love and Power which lead to effective human relationships.
Like anything else there is a time for caring and a time for confronting. Each in it's own time. Care when caring is called for and confront when confrontation is required.
Excellent Book for help in knowing how and when to care-front :)

An absolute MUST for grayscale enthusiasts!!!

Wow!!! Nikki has set a new standard for coloring book artists across the world with this amazing and special book! Not only are you getting 20 beautiful images of women of various fantacy, you get three and a half pages of instruction on how to color grayscale, what materials you can use, basic colored pencil techniques, basic marker techniques, what colors to choose, and the best way to blend colored pencils on top of a grayscale image. Nikki also took the time to explain the paper she choose specifically for this book. The book itself ihas a glue binding. There is also a paragraph about the book with a link to her grayscale coloring website where you will find many more tips, tutorials, and examples of grayscale coloring. Now to one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE parts of the book. For every picture in the book, you will find a small 3x4 colored image for your coloring inspiration AND two more of the images uncolored so that you can play with your color choices before you color your full sized image. How neat is that?! No more regretting color choices halfway through a picture! You can use one for pencils or watercolor pencils and the other for marker! This is not only a coloring book, its a coloring lesson book with invaluable tips and techniques tried and true by Nikki herself. In this edition, The Beginner's Edition, the pictures are slightly darker which means using even a single color brings out many different shades. It's also a great way to practice your shading before you move on to her other edition of this book, The Advanced Edition, where the pictures are lighter giving you more freedom with shading and using more colors. Now that grayscale coloring is becoming more popular, there are more and more grayscale books out there but none of them have the care, time, and thoughtfulness of Nikki's book. It truly sets the bar for future grayscale books! This book is an absolute MUST for those who are already into or interested in trying grayscale coloring. It will bring you hours of enjoyment and you'll be amazed at what your finished work looks like! I was given my copy of this book in return for my honest and unbiased review. I highly recommend this book!

This book is worth more than 5 stars. She really thought of everything with the quality and the test images to try out color schemes and mediums before putting them on the actual picture. The pictures are beautiful and this book is just overall amazing. One of my favorite books.

A fantastic book for everyone, beginner to beyond!

This book is stunning and eyecatching. It is a standard size, 29cm x 21cm (11 x 8.5 inches) and glue bound. The cover is a glossy card, with a half coloured image from the book in a limited colour palette.�
The paper is not your standard self published paper- it is thicker and smoother, and much more suited to the image style in this book.
I had no trouble with pencils, and could achieve quite a few layers with wax and oil based pencils. I experienced no bleeding or shadowing with fineliners, but some heavy shadowing with markers. Images are single sided, so this isn't an issue. Make sure to pop a few sheets of paper behind the image to protect the next one.�

This book is one of a few grayscale books coming out recently, and is a fantastic example of a greyscale book done right.�
There are two versions of this book, the beginners edition, which I am reviewing here, and the advanced edition, which I will be reviewing next week. The beginners version has darker shadows and details to guide you, making it a great option for those new to greyscale or wanting an easier book.
The images are from the artists previous books, but rendered in greyscale, not black and white lineart. Images are surrounded by a black border, preventing them from entering the spine at all.
The introductory material is one of the great features of this book. There are 4 pages of greyscale tutorials, introducing you to the basics of colouring greyscale images. There are also some techniques for pencils and markers explained in this section. The artist has a huge amount of information, tutorials and product reviews on her website as well.
After the introductory material, there is a section with tester images. This is three small versions of each image - one with the artists original colours, and two blank versions for you to test media and colours before starting the full size version.
Intricacy and line length is a bit tricky to evaluate in a greyscale book, but the images do have mainly larger �areas with only a few intricate components.�

Health�
If you like fantasy, this book will be a great one for times of anxiety or pain. The imagery is the type that lends itself to distraction. If greyscale colouring is new to you, it is a great way to start with some simpler images.�
For times when your concentration is low, this book would be a great fit - the images don't require a huge time investment, and you can even colour the smaller tester images if you feel the larger ones are too much.�
Those with visual or fine motor impairments should not struggle with these images - there are few intricate areas, and the shadowing and depth means that these are forgiving of a slip of the hand. But as always, please check the images before you decide!�

A fun audio book

My 4yo LOVES this CD/book. We listen to it in he car all the time and she loves acting out the characters when we read the book together. She has a few (Sofia, good dinosaur, sleeping beauty) but this one is probably her favorite. Side note, we've borrowed a few other ones from the library and a weird thing is the Cinderella one has the same exact music.... Lol. My daughter loves it tho!

This book was not written by Charles Taze Russell, although it does contain a lot of quotes from Russell. It also contains much that Russell did not teach, and I am sure, that he would not have approved. The true authors of the book were Clayton J. Woodworth and George Fisher, and edited by Joseph Rutherford.

The book is significant as a historical background of the Jehovah's Witnesses as well as the Bible Students; eventually, the vast majority of the Bible Students who had been associated with Russell did not accept the unique claims of The Finished Mystery.
