A very good primer if you know nothing about personal finances

I think this is a really good book. However, it is a first edition, and I think it may be a bit too basic in some areas of coverage. Nevertheless, if you know nothing about personal finances other than loans, paychecks, and bills, this book is a very good start to get you thinking about your personal finances at different stages of your education, training, and career. It is an easy read over one weekend.

Not worth my time or money

This book could have been great, but really misses the mark. Here's a summary of the main points of the book:
- make a budget and "do your best" to stick to it
- have emergency reserves in case you lose your job
- buy enough insurance to cover risks you may face
- don't mess with the IRS, pay your taxes
- pay you debts with the highest interest rates first
- if you have kids, start saving early
- start saving for retirement on day 1
- you have to have a financial plan through all stages of training
- spend less than you make

There's really nothing here that you couldn't get online or by meeting with a good financial advisor for a couple of hours. It is a short book to get through, but I don't think it is still worth your time. I liked "Doctor's Eyes Only" and David Marcinko's financial planning book much more. These books have more practical and helpful advice for someone with little knowledge on finances.

Wish I had this information in medical school

Dr. Steiner's book is well-written, easy to understand, and very straightforward. I would recommend this book to any graduating 4th year medical student, intern, or resident, who wants to learn about the basic of personal finance. The book won't take you very long to read and the insight gained regarding your financial future will put you on road to success. Well done!

Sam is anything but bubbly. His surly demeanour is the complete opposite of Katie's, and over the six years that she’s known him one thing has become very clear: Sam cannot stand her. The fact that he makes her nervous doesn’t help the situation. Around Sam her verbal diarrhoea seems ten times worse, the snort that she tries to hold in when she laughs refuses to be suppressed, and her clumsiness assumes clown-like proportions.

If only he weren’t quite so intimidating, she might be able to act like a normal human being, but his sheer masculine beauty is enough to throw her off before she’s even spoken to him. Then there’s the fact that he looks at her like she’s something he’s scraped off his shoe. The combination is enough to short-circuit her brain.

Katie may be bubbly and bright but unfortunately her past is not, and it’s started leaking into her present. She hides her fear from her friends as they have problems of their own, but when Sam finds out the potential danger she’s in, for some reason he is furious.

Then again, there’s a reason Sam is the way he is. He has his own demons to contend with. Shutting himself off and burying his pain has been working well for him over the last six years since leaving the Special Forces, so the last thing he wants is to spend any time with the one woman that cuts through the numbness he surrounds himself with and actually makes him feel again. But he simply can’t stand by if Katie is in danger; he can’t allow her to be hurt. Unfortunately there are other ways to be hurt, and by getting closer to Katie, Sam may inflict more damage than her past ever could.

Because Sam is damaged, and some things are beyond repair.

This is a full-length contemporary romance / romantic comedy with its own HEA and no cliffhanger.

About the Author
Susie Tate is a General Practitioner and when she's not working she's looking after her four yummy boys under five (okay, well one is actually over thirty-five but it's the mental age that counts!). Before becoming a GP she worked her way through a fair few hospital specialties including A&E, General Medicine, Elderly care, Cardiology, General and Orthopaedic Surgery and Psychiatry. Maybe it's a bit unusual for a doctor to be writing romantic comedy/contemporary romance. But she's worked with and treated some real characters in her time and been involved with some pretty bizarre and often hilarious situations, and she wanted to use her experience to write what she hopes are funny, occasionally heartbreaking stories with a real insight into what goes on in hospital medicine.

Two and a Half Stars

This is the third book from Susie Tate and unlike her previous books it is disappointing. Her first book “Broken Heart Syndrome” was excellent (especially as a debut novel). Her second book “Sticks and Stones” proved that her debut novel was not just a fluke. So I was very disappointed that her third effort fell flat. In my opinion the book was not worth 3 stars but I didn’t want to give it 2 stars, or less, because I liked the characters. The storyline is not original having been done before (a lot) in the romance genre but Ms. Tate tried to make it unique in the way that her first two books were. However, it didn’t work. The main characters are well fleshed out, the supporting characters are delightful but there is just something about the story that was “blah”. The book had numerous grammatical and syntax errors and was too long. A good editor would have fixed the errors and shortened the book thus making the story tighter and the pace faster and more dramatic (considering the main storyline). There were also quite a number of inconsistencies within the book, and also in the supporting characters stories in this book compared to the previous books. But the book was not a complete disaster. It was a somewhat enjoyable light read. It is one of those books read once, never read again and gradually forgotten. But I will continue to read Ms. Tate’s books solely on the strength of her previous books which were original, entertaining and felt surprisingly real.
Her next book is about Goodie and I am actually looking forward to it. Goodie was one of the only good things in this book. I hope Ms. Tate’s next book is as good as, if not better than, “Broken Heart Syndrome” and “Sticks and Stones”.

Another favorite!

After reading 'Broken Heart syndrome' I started looking for other Susie Tate books. And yes: Beyond Repair was just out.

A new favorite for sure, this book tells the story of bubbly Katie, small in stature but very warm and likeable. For the last 6 years she has been attracted to Sam, but he has made it very clear he has nothing but dislike for her. The secondary characters are from the earlier Susie Tate books 'Broken Heart Syndrome' and 'Sticks and Stones'. Katie has a stalker and once Sam discovers this everything changes between them. But Sam has a past and is broken. Do Katie and Sam have a future together?

There is no smut in this book but I loved the interactions between Katie and Sam and how protective this broken man was towards her. And he was totally right when he was angry and told Katie she had no regards to her own safety. That was the only gripe I had with this book - that Katie was a bit too trusting sometimes.

Lots of humor and funny moments and a great epilogue. Loved it!

My Thoughts - Story
Hmmm…my thoughts?

Well, there are a limited number of overseas books that I really enjoy and this was definitely one of them. I thought the language barrier made this book and I found it adorable. Just as I found Katie. She was so freaking cute and made this book a winner. I loved trying to figure out what the Welsh slang meant and how everything was solved with a cup of tea!

A book like this was fast paced and the author did a great job with the characters – especially her development of Sam. From the grumpy, pompous ass that he was in the beginning to the over protective, pompous ass he was toward the end – there were so many times I wanted to smack him upside his head.

Enjoyable story from beginning to end with tons of flip flopping from Sam’s part to our comedic poster gay guy…Russell!

There was only one thing that I had a little problem with and that was the sudden switch of Sam – I think I would have liked that drawn out a bit more – especially with more of the snippy banter between Katie and Sam.

Katie has always had a crush on Sam (her best friend’s husband’s best friend) but he won’t give her the time of day and even lowers himself to complain constantly about her to his friend. Until something happens to Katie that suddenly has Sam showing an over-protective streak. Between Katie’s ex-boyfriend (drug/sex dealer) stalking her to the point of it being illegal and Sam trying to get past what happened in his past – Katie seems to be the only one who can bring an ounce of happiness and sunshine to everyone.

As Katie helps Sam learn to live again, their relationship grows and secrets are shared, but are they both strong enough to make it?

My goal in writing this book is to help people make sense of the science-related issues that impact their daily lives. Lies, Damned Lies, and Science provides an enlightening approach for contemplating scientific issues, and brings these issues into focus the way new glasses sharpen one’s vision. In other words, the book is a new lens through which to view the world. Each chapter reveals a unique set of elements that need to be taken into consideration when reasoning about a complex science-related issue. In addition to bringing these elements into focus, the book shows how they fit together into something greater than a sum of parts.

Most of the messages that bombard us everyday are carefully selected to present just one of a kaleidoscope of possible perspectives on technological, environmental, economic, and health issues such as global warming, mad cow disease, nanotechnology, genetically engineered food, who should take cholesterol-lowering drugs, and what are the merits of banning plastic bags. Oversimplified black-and-white perspectives of issues come from those who have a vested interest in convincing others of their point of view, or who are simply relaying information without thinking critically about it. This book explores ways to achieve more nuanced and balanced perspectives on a wide range of issues.

In a society in which science and technology drive the economy and infiltrate every aspect of daily life, it is dangerous for an elite few to make the decisions about how technology is used, who will be given access to it, and how money is spent to research scientific solutions to societal problems. Ironically, those with the power to make these decisions rarely have any background in science. Therefore, they are especially vulnerable to being hoodwinked by those who hold stake in an issue and have the money to get their voices heard. Yet, we too can make our voices heard through sound, evidence-based political, consumer, and medical decisions. To do this, we need to be armed with the knowledge that makes it difficult for clever stakeholders to deceive us.

Too many people lost confidence in their ability to understand science because they did poorly in science class in high school. However, even folks who excelled in high school science classes and majored in a scientific discipline in college are rarely adequately prepared to think critically about the science they encounter in their daily lives. High school and even college science tends to be focused on facts, formulae, and experiments with known outcomes. In the real world, there is much more uncertainty and interpretation. Decisions about contemporary scientific issues often must be made on the basis of incomplete information, and conflicting viewpoints are the norm rather than the exception. This book unravels the complexity of such issues to help scientists and nonscientists alike identify hogwash and balance tradeoffs to make well- reasoned decisions about science in everyday life.

Critical Thinking for Everyone

This book will not tell you what to think; it will teach you how to evaluate what others -want- you to think. If I were teaching a course on Critical Thinking, I would use this book as the central textbook; never before have I seen such a concise, readable coverage of the topic in a single volume. Each component of the process is identified, described, and presented with real-world examples.
At a time when everyone is trying to sell us something -- be it material goods or strange new ideas -- critical thinking is essential for survival. Whether you are trying to figure out where to take a stand on global warming, or how to not get ripped off by the local used-car salesman, this book will help. *Everyone* should read this book: I can only give it five stars here, but it rates many more. Excellent job!

An excellent guide to critical thinking

A good way to read this book is to start with the conclusion where the author shares twenty thinking tools to evaluate findings. This is an abstract of the entire book including all the critical thinking processes the author covers.

This is an excellent book that provides the qualitative critical thinking necessary for making better rational decisions regarding purchases, health care, and lifestyle. Many books impart the statistics to differentiate what is truly different from what is not. But, few books focus on framing the question correctly, understanding the biases of the stakeholders, and how to evaluate the findings. Ultimately, the qualitative thinking the author imparts is as important as the quantitative knowledge imparted by math books.

The author does an excellent job explaining how science works. It is a constant feedback loop of battling hypothesis and rebuttals that confuse the public. But, if you make an effort to understand the issue, you will grasp the evolving nuances of the arguments. Through this process our knowledge invariably advances.

Some highlights of the book include the matrix of stakeholders issues on page 34 regarding Global Warming, Drug approval, Genetically engineered food, and Mad cow disease. This matrix succinctly fleshes out all stakeholders positions on those four complex issues. The table of evidence being studied to understand climate change on page 83 is really thorough. Also, the concept of "pseudosymmetry of scientific authority" as explained on page 16 is interesting. It means the Media sometimes allocates as much print to both sides of an issue when the vast majority of the scientific community is on one side (that's why it is called pseudosymmetry). The entire chapter 5 on differentiating between cause and coincidence is excellent. Chapter 7 on interpreting statistics is also very good including its specific section on elucidating hidden confounding factors. Within this chapter, she also states the most important phrase in statistics: "results can be statistically significant without being statistically meaningful." Or given a large enough sample size, stat tests invariably uncover at least small differences which may be trivial. Chapter 9 is an interesting overview of widespread thinking flaws including anchoring, confirmation bias, confusing randomness for a trend, overgeneralization, and mistaking cause and effect. Those themes are now often covered in the trendy topic of behavioral economics. Chapter 10 discloses many websites that are helpful in investigating various claims.

On the other hand, I also found an error and a debatable position. On page 78, the diagram mapping out a clinical study should have Group 1 getting a placebo and Group 2 getting the drug. The diagram instead shows Group 1 receiving nothing and Group 2 receiving both the placebo and the drug. I bet this has confused many readers. Additionally, the mentioned concept of pseudosymmetry is very interesting. But, one should not immediately derive that science is a popularity contest and accept that when many more scientists are on one side of the issue they are right. This is not necessarily so. Thomas S. Kuhn, in his classic "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions," has exposed that correct new scientific ideas often come up against massive resistance from the scientific establishment hoisting the status quo. This suggests that sometimes pseudosymmetry is not so "pseudo" after all.

If this subject interests you, I recommend Motulsky Intuitive Biostatistics: A Nonmathematical Guide to Statistical Thinking that will provide you a strong quantitative foundation to evaluate any hypothesis. I also liked Greenhalgh How to Read a Paper: The Basics of Evidence-based Medicine and Stanovich formidable What Intelligence Tests Miss: The Psychology of Rational Thought. Both books explore various facets of Seethaler's critical thinking in greater details.
