The Tangled Web We Weave: Stories and Confessions from real people and their affairs of the heart, by Ryan Bradley

The quest to find love never dies. It is inherent in all of us: man and woman, rich and poor, black and white, and yes, single and married. The stories in this book are about real people and their quest to find true love and the struggle to retain that love. Like many people searching for love, these people are alone and seeking the warmth of a loving relationship, but one thing separates these people from many others. These people are married. This book is about the ultimate human drama – an extra-marital affair of the heart. These are stories of real people from across the country who for one reason or another, have sought companionship outside their marriage at some point. They talk about the joys, the sorrows, the ecstasy and the stress of juggling a double life and why they are willing to risk so much to be with that one forbidden person. They talk about how the clock is always looming when they are together which is why every minute shared is treasured, every bout of laughter enjoyed, every kiss savored, every touch relished. You may like or dislike these people; you may empathize or identify with them. One thing is for certain though; you will have an opinion about them because these are stories that concern the heart. Whether you are single or married, you will find things in this book that will remain with you, because everyone who reads this book has one thing in common. We all desire to find someone.

Captured all my attention
By Jennifer L. Broich
I didn't know what to think of this book at first because I wasn't sure it was what would come of it but after reading the first story I was captured and couldn't put it down. Each and every story in this book was therapeutic for me. I felt so comforted knowing that people could find such true love outside. It was so fascinating yet it even felt taboo to read it. This is a book that I will never forget. Story after story of real life situations of forbidden love that you just cannot resist. I just want to thank the author for his boldness of putting this altogether because I have felt so much comfort and therapy reading this book knowing that love can indeed find a way in any circumstance!

One of the best books ever read on affairs
By Jerry Bauer
Wow what a book from the first chapter to the last I had a problem setting this down . It is great seeing a book talk about the relationship part of affairs not the sex part . After reading the last chapter I can not wait to read the follow up to this book. This book shows how many people are in unhealthy, unhappy marriages and how in an affair you can find love and relationships that change you!

Postcards from the End of America, by Linh Dinh

Roaming the country by bus and train, on a budget and without any institutional support, Linh Dinh set out to document, in words and pictures, what life is like for people. From Los Angeles, Cheyenne, Portland, and New Orleans, to Jackson and Wolf Point--Linh walked miles and miles through unfamiliar neighborhoods, talking to whoever would talk to him: the homeless living in tent cities, the peddlers, the protestors, the public preachers, the prostitutes. With the uncompromising eye of a Walker Evans or a Dorothea Lange, and the indomitable, forthright prose of a modern-day Nelson Algren or James Agee, Dinh documents the appalling and the absurd with warmth and honesty, giving voice to America's often forgotten citizens and championing the awesome strength it takes to survive for those on the bottom.

Growing out of a photo and political writing blog Linh has maintained since 2009, Postcards from the End of America is an unflinching diary of what Linh sees as the accelerating collapse of America. Tracking the economic, political, and social unraveling--from the casinos to the abandoned factories and over all the sidewalks in between--with a poet's incisive tongue, Linh shows us the uncanny power of the people in the face of societal devastation.

Review
"Linh Dinh'sPostcards from the End of Americais a collection of some of the most brilliant observations penned on the terminal decline of the American empire. He gives a voice to those rendered invisible by a bankrupt corporate press. He has an unflinching honesty, refusing to romanticize the poor while also writing with great empathy about their lives. He lays bare the predatory evil of corporate capitalism, the death of liberty engendered by our security and surveillance state and the human cost of our system of inverted totalitarianism. He would make George Orwell or Joseph Roth proud. There are few writers in America I admire more."—Chris Hedges, author ofWages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative of Revolt

"If this nation’s ego is represented by the politicians, then its collective unconscious is riding in the seat next to Linh Dinh’s on the Greyhound bus, or slumping on the neighboring stool in the dive bar. In these—what do we call them? new-journalist epistles? prose poems? revelatory philippics? absurdist love letters?—Dinh introduces us to the legion of people not encompassed by any candidate’s plan for economic recovery. This book is a howl of joy and a laugh of despair." —Matthew Sharpe, author ofJamestownandThe Sleeping Father

"In today's celebrity-obsessed culture so focused on the antics of the wealthy and the famous, Linh Dinh stands as one of the only chroniclers of the gritty underside of our society, a very worthy successor to Jacob Riis of New York City's Gilded Age. In our increasingly impoverished country, if you want to understand the life of the other half—or the other two-thirds—there are few better guides to the texture of those dismal streets and alleys thanPostcards from the End of America." —Ron Unz,Silicon Valley entrepreneur and publisher ofThe Unz Review

Linh has edited the anthologiesNight, Again: Contemporary Fiction from VietnamandThree Vietnamese Poets. A very compelling read
By JustPlainBill
This is a collection of Linh Dinh’s postcards, which taken together are a diary of his travels and his conversations with those he meets. When he arrives in town, he doesn’t look for the “important” people in town or the local celebrities. Instead, he seeks out the ordinary Americans that populate buses, trains, local bars and restaurants, or the streets themselves. In impressive detail, he shares with his readers brief portraits of them and the details of their conversations together.

Each of these postcards skillfully and subtly pulls you into the intimacy of the conversation. Although Linh never goes for sentimentality or sympathy, and does not judge his conversation partners, you would need a heart of stone to avoid feeling sad or occasionally heartbroken. This feeling builds as you eventually realize in your travels with Linh that he has not cherry-picked his experiences—the people he meets are everywhere, and not hard to find if you are looking in the right place.

Linh’s descriptions truly bring each person he meets to life. The subjects themselves are by turns cheerful, resigned, once in a while briefly angry or irritated. Unexpectedly, they hardly ever seem to feel openly sorry for themselves. Linh takes a personal risk time and time again that few of us would risk even once, actively seeking engagement with people no matter where he needs to go to meet them.

Although the “postcards” are arranged in chronological order (tracking his progress across the US by bus and train), none are dependent on one another, and could be read in any order. Even without Linh’s prompting, however, you will feel some themes emerge unbidden as you continue. Linh reserves his own judgements for general commentary on the state of US society, spaced throughout his narrative. Personally, this reader did not find much to disagree with in that respect.

Some might be tempted to judge or label many of the people Linh talks to as isolated aberrations or society’s outliers, but Linh will help you recognize that there are a lot more of them than you think, and they more and more are becoming the largest part of what is now America.

This is one of the best and most engaging books I have read in a long time, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. You can also read Linh’s ongoing postcards at his blog at linhdinhphotos.blogspot.com.

With bombs and drones, then sticks and stones
By Scott Meredith
This brilliantly horrifying book is the prose version of Dylan's bleakest (and most real) ballad, North Country Blues. But whether you're blue or red, you're already "sliding down the oily pole of modernity" and will soon be "fighting for the remaining scraps". Get your head up it right here.

So the mining gates locked
And the red iron rotted
And the room smelled heavy from drinking
Where the sad silent song
Made the hour twice as long
As I waited for the sun to go sinking.

Laugh: it's not funny
By Nick J. Cuccia
Well written and insightful. The fall of an American empire rotting from the bottom up. This book documents the consequences of plutocracy, inequality and all while having a good laugh and a washed down with a few beers. Reminds me of Studs Turkel.

Feminist Thought: A More Comprehensive Introduction, by Rosemarie Putnam Tong

Feminist Thought is a clear, comprehensive, and incisive introduction to the major traditions of feminist theory, from liberal feminism, radical feminism, and Marxist and socialist feminism to care-focused feminism, psychoanalytic feminism, women of color feminisms, and ecofeminism. The fourth edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded. The chapter on multiculturalism was renamed Women of Color Feminisms and significantly updated, revised, and expanded by Tina Fernandes Botts of the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. The revisions also include a new section on existentialism as it relates to postmodern feminism, and a new conclusion that contemplates third-wave feminism and the future directions of feminist theory. Learning tools such as the new end-of-chapter discussion questions, and the bibliography, organized by topics within chapters, make Feminist Thought an essential resource for students and thinkers who want to understand the theoretical origins and complexities of contemporary feminist debates.

Review
Praise for the third edition:

Winner of a Choice Outstanding Academic Titles(OAT) award for 2009

“No other work gives one such a sense of the scope and substance of the major traditions of feminist theory. This richly transformed new edition of Feminist Thought is an indispensable resource for those who want to understand the theoretical origins and complexities of contemporary feminist debates. Tong’s comprehensive understanding of feminist theory enabled her to craft an indispensable overview that clearly illustrates the challenges as well as the promises of the range of approaches, perspectives, and frameworks that comprise feminist efforts to identify sources of oppression and transform women’s status as the ‘second sex.’”
—Nancy Tuana, Penn State University

“The third edition of Feminist Thought is an invaluable guide to all scholars and students of feminist theories. It provides a comprehensive overview of the richly diverse set of perspectives that guide feminist theory and action. Rosemarie Tong is generous, respectful, and even-handed in her clear and eloquent presentation of the strengths of each perspective, while providing fair but challenging criticism of its limitations. This edition improves on its excellent predecessors by being more comprehensive, more persuasive in its categorization of several theorists, and more helpful in understanding the relations among multicultural, global, and postcolonial feminist approaches. It is an essential resource for anyone seeking to engage with feminist theory.”
—Susan Sherwin, University Research Professor, Philosophy and Gender and Women's Studies, Dalhousie University

“The best introduction to feminist theory is now even better! Rewritten with substantially new chapters on multicultural, global, and postcolonial feminism, care-focused feminist thought, psychoanalytic feminism, and contemporary socialist feminist theory, this new edition of Feminist Thought provides an updated account of the rich traditions of feminist thought and brings them more fully into dialogue on behalf of future possibilities. Current, crystal clear, comprehensive, and critical: It is indispensable for both beginning students and more advanced readers.”
—John J. Stuhr, Emory University

"As in previous editions, Rosemarie Tong helps us understand better what we thought we knew, provides us with an easy entry into new perspectives we would like to know more about, and weaves it all together into a beautiful quilt she calls Feminist Thought. Just what is needed for teachers and students!"
—James P. Sterba, co-author of Does Feminism Discriminate Against Men?

Praise for the second edition:

“…provide[s] meaningful examples of how feminist theory can contribute to reconciling the needs for diversity and difference with those for integration and unity, precisely identifying and recognizing those differences as important ones.”
—Gender, Technology, and Development

”The first edition of Feminist Thought published in 1989 was at the time regarded as one of the most invaluable guides through a wide diversity of complex, feminist thought. This second, more comprehensive edition shares all the virtues of the first. Rosemarie Putman Tong has that rare gift of being able to critically grapple with, yet fully respect, the substance of widely differing feminist critical approaches. In turn the reader is guided to think critically, respectfully and sympathetically.”
—Women’s Philosophy Review

“Tong has done it again! This eagerly awaited new edition of Feminist Thought provides an up-to-date, critical introduction of the major traditions in feminist theory. New chapters on ecofeminism and multicultural and global feminism make this book an indispensable introduction to the diversity of feminist thought. Providing a clear and comprehensive examination of emerging perspectives in feminist theorizing, Feminist Thought is an essential resource for students and thinkers who want to understand the theoretical origins and complexities of contemporary feminist debates.”
—Nancy Tuana, University of Oregon

“I have looked at the revised edition of Rosemarie Tong’s Feminist Thought, and like it very much. My students loved the original for its clarity and comprehensiveness; they will appreciate the new, updated one still more. I recommend it highly!”
—Laura Purdy, University of Toronto and Wells College

“An illuminating, up-to-date discussion of the many varieties of feminism. Invaluable for scholars and students alike. Tong has surpassed herself.”
—James P. Sterba, University of Notre Dame

Praise for the first edition:

“Nicely balanced, eminently readable.… As an overview of the immense variety and richness of activist, literary, and philosophical feminist thought, this is a very good book. It should find its niche in women’s studies programs.… It is a book that feminist sociologists should read.”
—Contemporary Sociology

“Simply a splendid survey of all the major ways of theorizing about women in contemporary society. …This is an ideal book for introducing students and nonstudents alike to the strengths and the richness of our feminist intellectual traditions.”
—Sandra Bartky, University of Illinois–Chicago

“More than a survey; an original, critical analysis that pushes the frontiers of political thought as thought by feminists.”
—Jean Bethke Elshtain, Vanderbilt University

“This is an excellent book—beautifully written, clear, philosophically probing, and insightful—just what I would expect from Rosemarie Tong. I especially appreciate having the discussions of psychoanalytic, existentialist, and postmodern feminism, which give the book more breadth than other overviews of feminist theory.”
—Susan Wendell, Simon Fraser University

Of the several main contenders covering the diverse field, Tong's may be at once the most comprehensive and representative
By Giuseppe C.
Although I would agree that this text isn't a nail-biting page-turner, I have difficulty believing those reviewers who found the primary texts by the likes of Butler, Cixous, Irigaray so much livelier, more accessible and clear than Tong's explanations. Post-structuralist criticism, especially following upon the heels of French thinkers like Lacan and Derrida, became dense, esoteric, and difficult beyond the understanding of even many Ph.D.s with its specialist jargon and self-referential, seemingly private, inquiries/demonstrations into the limits and possibilities of human language. Feminist criticism--originally influenced heavily my male thinkers in the areas of structuralist, post-structuralist, post-modernist thought--was no different. In fact, its frequently recondite, difficult, and impenetrable prose led to many revolts by undergraduate women against feminist theory itself.

For this reason, Tong's book was especially valuable during feminism's heyday--an organized approach to the entire field as well as an accessible explication of the major, primarily female, feminist thinkers. Given the movement's declining influence as the 1990s came to an end, it was important that Tong came out with this new edition--not only to address developments since the 2nd edition--including the so-called "backlash"--but to serve as a reminder that even if feminist theory had lost much of its popularity and influence, it was still alive--and many of its most influential voices, if less heard from due to apathy and new priorities, were merely waiting to be rediscovered by later, intellectually curious students.

While there are always those who will deride "theory" (French theory, especially, has never been popular with American academics), thinking about what we normally do without thinking--in effect, thinking about thinking--is critical to the life of mind which, in a desperate world where only survival and political action count, becomes a "necessary luxury," a sure sign that all human actions and behavior aren't determined exclusively by the herd. Moreover, theory offers a useful paradigm, a structure, a conceptual framework for what would otherwise be an occasionally diverting but rather incoherent chorus of various, individual voices. The danger we face, especially since the downloading, piecing-out, and "atomizing" of texts by the many individual hyper-spatial "files" (fragments of what were once whole and complete works, albums, suites) is exactly the sort of disarray that theory seeks to organize and clarify--and to do so without "reducing" the original works and their authors to mere talking points and topic sentences in an overly broad, sweeping, homogenizing overview. Tong's strength is that she covers the field without misrepresenting its individual voices. The reader has every right to trust her and her carefully chosen words.

Textbook.
By Samantha S.
Purchased for a WMST class. Very, very dry. Hard to tell if the material or the way this was organized and written made it so dry, as a lot of feminist work is very interesting and dynamic. If used in a classroom setting, effective. If you're picking this up to learn about feminist theory for fun, I would reconsider.

Excellent intro to the many feminisms
By A Customer
This is the best source I've seen which defines the various feminisms (e.g. liberal, marxist, existentialist...) Tong describes the assumptions of each position and then presents supportive and opposing views. Her approach encourages the reader to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each position. Very balanced presentation with plenty of illustrative examples.

Howard Cosell: The Man, the Myth, and the Transformation of American Sports, by Mark Ribowsky

A deeply misunderstood sports legend, once the most hated and loved man in America, gets his due in this absorbing, revelatory biography.

Howard Cosell was one of the most recognizable and controversial figures in American sports history. His colorful bombast, fearless reporting, and courageous stance on civil rights soon captured the attention of listeners everywhere. No mere jock turned "pretty-boy" broadcaster, the Brooklyn-born Cosell began as a lawyer before becoming a radio commentator. "Telling it like it is," he covered nearly every major sports story for three decades, from the travails of Muhammad Ali to the tragedy at Munich. Featuring a sprawling cast of athletes such as Jackie Robinson, Sonny Liston, Don Meredith, and Joe Namath, Howard Cosell also re-creates the behind-the-scenes story of that American institution, Monday Night Football. With more than forty interviews, Mark Ribowsky presents Cosell's life as part of an American panorama, examining racism, anti-Semitism, and alcoholism, among other sensitive themes. Cosell's endless complexities are brilliantly explored in this haunting work that reveals as much about the explosive commercialization of sports as it does about a much-neglected media giant. 35 black-and-white illustrations

Review
“Starred review. The definitive word on a loved, loathed, maddeningly complex broadcasting legend.” (Kirkus)

“Ribowsky, who previously wrote a fine book on Satchel Paige, gives Cosell the treatment this controversial giant in sports journalism deserves.” (New York Post)

“A powerful biography… well researched and well written.” (Jewish Journal)

“...[T]he first thoroughly researched and effectively framed biography of Cosell and his times...

Beyond its poignant depiction of a flawed, paranoid and narcissistic character with the uncanny talent to immerse himself entirely, almost supernaturally, into emerging events, Ribowsky's Howard Cosell makes crystal clear the entwined path of Cosell's epic career within the world of Big Time sports and its broadcasting partners, as they quite literally created the monstrosities they are today.” (James Campion - Huffington Post)

“A sportscasting giant is interpreted for a generation that never knew him…Mark Ribowsky's clear-eyed take on the broadcaster who built his career on "telling it like it is" reveals the insecurities that fueled Cosell's bravado, charting his ascension from growing up in a middle-class home in Brooklyn to a short-lived career as a lawyer before elbowing his way into radio and TV and becoming the most influential―and controversial―sports commentator in America.” (Sports Illustrated)

“In Howard Cosell, author Mark Ribowsky reveals the obnoxious broadcaster who transformed sports reporting.” (Sherryl Connelly - New York Daily News)

“Ribowsky has deftly captured this complicated figure, and anyone who cares about sports and how we talk about sports will find this book well worth the time, no matter how off-putting its subject was to many.” (Steve Kettman - San Francisco Chronicle)

“Ribowsky, who seems to have read just about everything on Cosell, is a deft narrator of the life of Humble Howard, taking his readers from the skinny kid in Brooklyn who yearned to spend more time with an absent father to the sportscaster who helped make an event out of “Monday Night Football” by being so very different from anyone else who had ever called a game.” (New York Times Book Review)

“Mr. Ribowsky's book is an entertaining read and a thought-provoking portrayal of the multi-faceted Howard Cosell in all his glory and enmity. It is based on voluminous, well-sourced research into print and electronic material, coupled with numerous interviews with Cosell's contemporaries.

...the book vividly depicts Cosell as a brilliant meteor that soared through the electronic sky before ultimately fading, dimmed by controversy, age, exhaustion and perhaps his own obstreperous personality. Warts and all, there has never been, and may never be again, anyone quite like Howard Cosell.” (Don Ohlmeyer, former president of NBC West Coast and produced of "Monday Night Football" from 1972 to 1976 - Wall Street Journal "Bookshelf")

Cosell and Controversary Walked Hand in Hand
By Bill Emblom
Author Mark Ribowsky has treated the readers of this book with an in-depth biography of the much-maligned sportscaster Howard Cosell. To those of us old enough to remember Howard he was involved in a number of noteworthy events during his four decades of being a public figure. I remember his Speaking of Sports program on WABC radio in New York City. When Milwaukee Judge Elmer Roller briefly suspended the Braves' move to Atlanta Howard came on like gangbusters with, "Hello again, everyone. Howard Cosell Speaking of Sports. In the headlines this morning the National League meets in New York with feelings raging from chagrin to chaos. Details after this meassage." The things that stick in my mind.

Howard Cosell is primarily remembered for his role in boxing and Monday Night Football. His relationship with Muhammad Ali was something very special, and author Ribowsky does a very commendable job in bringing that to the forefront. Howard's call on George Foreman's decking of Joe Frazier with, "Down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier" is often imitated, and his final three words spoken on the death of John Lennon, "Dead on arrival" during a Monday Night Football game is equally memorable. Howard took the advice of fellow announcer Frank Gifford to make the announcement. The Monday night trio of Howard, Frank Gifford, and Don Meredith turned Monday night into a special event that often upstaged the game itself. The travails that involved this trio are also included in the book.

In addition to boxing and football Cosell was involved in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics along with the Olympics of 1972 in which eleven Israeli athletes were murdered by a faction of the PLO in Munich, Germany. ABC announcer Jim McKay spoke the legendary words, "They're all gone." ABC Sports boss Roone Arledge made the correct call in denying Cosell's insistence of going on the air to vent his feelings. Cosell called the continuation of the Olympic games "obscene" when Olympic Committee chairman Avery Brundage insisted the games continue.

Cosell also occupied a number of lesser roles such as when ABC telecast major league baseball, and gives his opinions regarding Jackie Robinson and Curt Flood. He ventured into an Ed Sullivan type of variety show which mercifully had a short life of its own.

Howard Cosell was a bitter man near the end of his life, and the loss of his beloved wife Emmy was a devastating blow to him. A psychologist may have said that Howard was an insecure individual who masked these insecurities with his blustering personality. He was described as an individual who people loved to hate, but his contributions were not to be denied during his heyday. Whatever your thoughts are on Howard Cosell you will find this to be a thorough biography of this controversial individual. I enjoyed it, and it brought back a lot of memories.

Excellent survey of Humble Howard's life and times
By Christopher Barat
It's rather surprising that we haven't gotten a definitive biography of Cosell until now. Sports books trumpeting "The Best X Ever," "The Last Real Y," and "The Game that Changed Z Forever" seem to be a dime a dozen, and the titles of the vast majority of them punch far above their actual weight (to use a boxing metaphor that I think is fitting in this case). But Cosell really was a transformational figure. As author Ribowsky notes in this even-handed, frequently compelling book, the world of sports journalism could probably use someone with Cosell's outspokenness (as opposed to "mere" loudmouthedness) right about now. That someone, however, would best be advised to ditch the comically oversized ego as an optional accessory.

Cosell clearly had many positive attributes, such as a willingness to fight for the underdog and a strong loyalty to his family, but he is a classic example of someone who ultimately became a parody of himself. I remember watching the last fight broadcast he did, the 1982 heavyweight mismatch between Larry Holmes and Randall "Tex" Cobb, which would be mercifully forgotten today were it not for Cosell's steady hectoring of the referee and "the boxing world" in general for letting the fight drag on to the finish. In this instance, Cosell ceased to be a truth-teller and became simply an irritating scold. The "comical" bickering in the booth of Monday Night Football (which, as is now well known, papered over some extremely hard feelings and jealousies among the principals) followed a similar downward trajectory. Cosell's "using" of people for name-dropping purposes (Ribowsky describes this as "people collecting," a la Professor Horace Slughorn, but with a nastier edge), hypersensitive anti-anti-Semitism, drinking problems, and general obnoxiousness served to ensure that, when he gave his enemies swords with which to run him through (e.g. the infamous "little monkey" comment on MNF), the wounds they inflicted upon him would last far beyond their "heal-by" dates. Even so, there is something truly sad about his disintegration and withdrawal from the wider world following the death of his beloved wife. What price fame -- or infamy?

Ribowsky does a good job of covering the well-known high points of Cosell's career -- MNF, his long relationship with Muhammad Ali -- and manages to make Cosell a sympathetic figure even while playing up his many flaws. The short and decidedly unhappy story of Cosell's 1975 prime-time variety show (!) Saturday Night Live (!!!!) is unquestionably the funniest part of a read that, due to the serious issues with which Cosell was involved and his marked genius for ticking people off, is somewhat more dour than those seeking a gay romp through the funky late-60s and 70s might expect. Highly recommended for those who seek enlightenment as to why the guy with the bad toupee and big vocabulary was such a big deal back in the day, as well as those who witnessed the blow-by-blow themselves.

sharp portrait, blurred picture
By Joel Drucker
Unquestionably well-researched -- impressive amounts of hunting and gathering. And yet, in some ways, shows the peculiar strengths and limits of a certain kind of journalism. By so immersing us in the singularity of Cosell, the author neglects a broader -- bigger? smaller? -- picture of what really makes him such an iconic American figure. Like many breakthroughs, Cosell's arc follows a similar path: at first unfamiliar, then significant, then so familiar as to become non-relevant and forgotten (another example: Ernest Hemingway's writing style).

So yes, Cosell was a human being -- deeply flawed, rude, insecure. But again, the broader picture is how Cosell was at the head of the line when it came to turning sports into something more than the toy department. Society was in flux in the '60s. Outsiders such as Harry Edwards and Jack Scott were probing how sports was hardly pure. Ditto for athletes such as Jim Bouton, Dave Meggyesy and of course, Ali. Cosell's presence and voice on a major forum such as ABC brought that front and center, at once amplifying and legitimizing for a far broader approach to exploring sports than had ever existed before. He's the catalyst for programs such as HBO's Real Sports, ESPN's Outside the Lines, PTI and so many forms of vocalized sports talk.
- Yet none of that is addressed with any significant depth.

It's as if the author has been blinded by all those sources, all those anecdotes from journalists, producers, commentators. For they too can't see out from their periscopes.

For Anyone Serious About Leading Their Organization Into the 21St Century

This groundbreaking book, already creating a stir, could only have been written by Peter R. Scholtesauthor of the best-selling book ever written on teams: The Team Handbook. In The Leader's Handbook, Scholtes, widely acknowledged as one of the most influential teachers of leadership and management of the decade, does for managers what The Team Handbook did for teams. Scholtes shows how bad systems, not bad workers, cause the vast majority of management problems. He takes controversial stands against performance appraisals and incentive compensation. And he takes you from theory to practice with a wide variety of state-of-the-art activities and exercises to help you immediately begin implementing breakthrough improvements in all your work processes.

About the Author

Peter R. Scholtes is an internationally known author, lecturer, and consultant. From 1987 to 1993 Mr. Scholtes shared the platform with W. Edwards Deming, helping to educate corporations about the new philosophy of the Quality movement. He was one of the first to synthesize the principles of the organizational development field with the teachings of Dr. Deming. Mr. Scholtes is the author of The Team Handbook. He has written award-winning articles on several Quality-related topics, especially with Dr. Deming's encouragement, on the controversial topic of performance appraisal: What's wrong with it and what to do instead. He is a popular keynote speaker at international conferences in such places as London, Sydney, Moscow, and Rio de Janeiro. In March of 1995, Quality Digest recognized Mr. Scholtes as one of the 50 Quality leaders of this decade.

A model for the leaders of the future.
By A Customer
I knew that the organization I work for was stuck in the stone-age (Dismal Leaders). Then Something amazing happened. Upper management decided we needed a change. Due to my backround in Teambuilding, I was asked to Champion the change for the future. I decided to utilize most of the things I learned from reading this insightful book. The results to this point have been outstanding. People are beginning to come out of their shells and be creative again. Barriers are slowly coming down throughout the organization. Real Work is getting done through cross-funtional teams of people who care about customer satisfaction. We have a long way to go, but as long as management sticks to their word, change will happen. This book is a useful tool for that transformation.Everyone who is in a management position should read this book and learn what it's like to truely lead your fellow workers. I also recommend the Team Handbook.

Practical, incisive and visionary handbook
By Amazon Customer
Scholtes expects to shock people right from the first page of his Preface. Let me quote extensively:
"More than 95 percent of your organization's problems derive from your systems, processes, and methods, not from your individual workers....

We look to the heroic efforts of outstanding individuals for our successful work. Instead we must create systems that routinely allow excellent work to result from the ordinary efforts of ordinary people.

Changing the system will change what people do. Changing what people do will not change the system.

Certain common management approaches--management by objectives, performance appraisal, merit pay, pay for performance, and ISO 9000--represent not leadership but the abdication of leadership.

Current buzzwords like empowerment, accountability, and high performance are meaningless, empty babble..." (ix-x)

The old organizations's leaders need: forcefulness, ability to motivate and inspire, decisiveness, willfulness, assertiveness, result- and bottom-line orientation, being task-oriented and having integrity and diplomacy.

Scholtes' new leadership competencies (much influenced by Edward Deming's ideas...) are based on a new mentality and understanding of: systems thinking, variability of work, how we learn, psychology and human behavior, interactions of these components, and vision, meaning, direction and focus.

The bulk of the book gives clear elaborations of these new competencies, with charts, illustrations, pertinent questions and many tools. Ch. 4 on "Getting the Daily Work Done" is a tough one, partly because it takes much effort to grasp the author's use of a Japanese term, "Gemba" (even when I can read the original Chinese characters). Issues of waste, standardization, change versus improvement, performance without appraisal, use of measurement data... are all seen in the new light of systems thinking.
Carefully study the differences between "Crazymakers" and "Healing and Learning" in the workplace (pp378-387). There is a summary of the book under "The 47 Habits of Pretty Good Leaders" (pp391-6). Peter Senge's books give excellent background material. This one is a real handbook that should be methodically studied, discussed, adapted and applied to one's own institutions. One must not forget the advice given in Chapter 1: "leaders must be patient with themselves and others, persistent, and humble, and allow themselves and others to be inelegant." (p12,p391)

Great Book on Process & Quality Improvement
By Kevin Mackie
This is a very good book that I would recommend to any manager. I also think many employees would learn a lot from reading this book as well. So why just three stars?

The main reason is because the book talks very little in the way of leadership or inspiring your people. This is a book primarily focused on process and quality improvement, but learning about leadership and inspiring my employees is the reason I bought this book. To me, the difference between a manager and a leader is that the successful manager gets his people to do what needs to be done. A successful leader gets his people to *want* to do what needs to be done. There was a lot more information on that topics in The Team Handbook, which Scholtes co-wrote.

The truth is that I think this is a very good book, and I'd gladly give it four stars if the title was more descriptive of the book's content. What I like most about this book is the way Scholter walks the reader through the thought process of analyzing an existing process and finding ways to improve it. He bases many of his principles from Deming's work on quality improvement and, not surprisingly, many of his examples are from Japanese companies. Many of his ideas transfer easily to the American workforce, but I'm not convinced that all of them would be so effective outside of Japan, due to the cultural differences between the two workforces.

Amazon has enabled Search Inside This Book, so I would encourage anybody thinking about purchasing this book to take a peek and see the topics that Scholter covers. Flip through the Surprise Me feature and you'll likely see some of the many charts and diagrams that Scholter uses to great effect to show the reader a process, or give them a tool to analyze their own processes.

The only area that didn't sit well with me is Chapter 9, Performance without Appraisal. In this chapter it appears as though Scholtes' premise is that workers belong to McGregor's Theory X camp. While some are, the overly simplistic approach that assumes all are makes this chapter very frustrating to read. He spends a lot of time highlighting the fault of performance management, but he provides very little insight how to do it another way.

The net is that this is a very informative book presented in a very clear manner that can provide benefit for almost every manager. The title is a little misleading, so make sure you flip through the book before buying it.

“Hot-Hands” and Casper have been dating for a month, but their relationship is about as smooth as shattered glass. It doesn't help that Hot-Hands is racked with guilt over his high school bullying of Casper, or that Casper darts away whenever his boyfriend gets a little too frisky.

Desperate to hang onto Casper, Hot-Hands tries to earn back the trust he destroyed years ago, so they can face their disastrous past and have a chance at a happy future.

Cold Hands focuses on high school bullying for being gay. This is the sequel to Hot Hands and contains big spoilers if read first. Hot Hands is free of charge.

Sweet and touching
By The Romance Reviews
For this entire series I've wanted more, more, more time with each couple. Well, now I have it!

COLD HANDS is a follow up the first in the series. This followed Casper and Jamie after their shaky HFN at the end of Hot Hands.

Jamie and Casper had known each other since middle school. Only problem was they hadn't been friends the entire time. More like enemies, as Casper was horribly bullied by Jamie throughout middle and most of high school. So when Casper discovered that Jamie has had a crush on him the entire time, it came as quite a shock.

Casper still wasn't quite able to forget all the torment Jamie put him through during their school years. He's with Jamie, but didn't quite believe it and was kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Which was great, as I don't think anyone would realistically forgive and forget that kind of torment so easily. I really enjoyed Casper's character and the strong man he'd become. He took the terrible way he was bullied and used it to make himself a better person.

Jamie, poor Jamie. I don't think anyone was more upset about his actions than he was. As much as Casper wasn't ready to forgive, neither was Jaime. He knew what he had done and was therefore very patient and understanding. He was willing to wait for Casper to be ready to move further in the relationship, or not. He was also okay with things staying the way they were, as long as he was able to be with Casper. It was all very sweet and touching and I loved every minute of it.

This was a great little glimpse into the lives of past characters and I was so excited when they were able to get a solid happily ever after. But I'm now feeling greedy and still want more with all the couples.

When the idea of a relationship becomes real...
By Cole Riann
Hot Hands was by far my favorite story in Erica Pike's College Fun and Gay series, so you can imagine my excitement when she said that she was writing a sequel. Cold Hands is almost as much of an antithesis to that first story as it's title. Hot Hands introduces us to Casper -- a college student who was brutally bullied, more like abused, in high school for being gay -- and his ex-bully and middle school crush Jaime. Casper shows up to college and is surprised and devastated to learn that one of the ring leaders of the guys who tormented him is not only there but also in some of his classes. He does everything he can to avoid Jaime, but doesn't know that a lot of Jaime's bullying stemmed from his own awakening homosexual feelings towards Cass. His physical and emotional abuse for most of his teen years have really impacted him. He's shy and doesn't understand why he's still attracted to one of the men who abused him, which also messes with his head. His attachments soon turn to another man, however, a man he starts to call "Hot-Hands" because of the way the man's hands draw him out and make him feel sexy and interesting whenever he's accosted by this same hard-breathing man in the dark. It's a serious case of having a secret admirer, but Casper has his suspicions and soon finds them proven wrong. All that time, Casper had inadvertently been giving himself up to the man who caused him so much pain and now he's more confused than ever.

Cold Hands resumes this story from Jaime's point of view, which is a serious change in how we understand the story. Cass is a thinker who constantly analyzes his feelings and thoughts, but because of their unique relationship he knows very little about what Jaime really thinks and Jaime's motives. The change in point of view starts this sequel off on a different foot. We immediately see that Jaime has real regret about the way he treated Cass in the past and that his feelings now are genuine, and also that he's a different man now. He understands himself and has grow up in the two years they spend apart. Now, he's out of the closet and over the shame that he grew up with from a conservative family and town. Still, Cass doesn't know that. He's still confused about Jaime's motives and his own. How can he trust himself and his feelings if he's seriously considering having a relationship with his abuser?

The real difference between the first story and the second isn't the point of view, but in the focus of their relationship. If you look at these stories together as one, then this story is the payoff. The first was the setup, the background and the premise -- the meetings in the dark with Casper's "secret admirer" and the subsequent reveal of his real identity -- but, Cold Hands is the meat and bones of their relationship. This story carries on to peel back the layers and find out if these guys have a solid base to build any relationship upon and how they go about doing that. The change in point of view facilitates that because by nature of their relationship as abuser/victim, Jaime automatically sees the bigger picture than Cass. Casper is still mired in confusion about his feelings and dealing with understanding Jaime and his actions and in evidence of how that abuse affected him, he's battling his own self-esteem.

I'm so glad that Erica decided to continue their story because I think that it is only in retrospect that this story feels as if it completed the first. Cold Hands makes the whole story better by giving us a chance to see them work through the consequences of their actions in the first story, and that in turn gives them the HEA they deserve. This also shows in the sex in both stories. So much of the first story takes place while Casper thinks "Hot-Hands" is someone else entirely that a lot of those scenes were exploratory, sexy and hot in a situational way, playing on the mysterious suitor with a dirty and exhibitionist twist. I read that story as a really good piece of erotica with an engaging plot. This story moves their physical relationship into a place of intimacy, so much so that it's often too difficult for Casper to really handle.

I definitely recommend these stories to all of you, though you absolutely have to read Hot Hands first. Well done Erica and thank you for writing this story so I could spend more time with Cass and Jaime!
