This book makes me wish I had a time machine

I wish I could send this back in time to myself three years ago when I was first digging into Postgres, as this book contains all the hard earned nuggets I've found through scouring online discussions and email lists, plus a lot more I didn't know, and all in a very clear and readable format. It focuses a lot on explaining how Postgres works under the hood so instead of just following rules of thumb for selecting hardware or choosing configuration options, you can really understand what Postgres is doing and *why* these things affect it's performance. Highly recommended to anyone responsible for setting up and maintaining a Postgres db, developing an application that uses Postgres, or who just wants to better understand how Postgres works.

Get the best performance out of your hardware and PostgreSQL

I've also read the companion PostgreSQL 9 Admin Cookbook. The Admin cookbook is an easier read, but this book had a lot more information I was unaware of and probably hit my weaker knowledge spots. There is very little overlap between the two books.

What surprised me most about this book was how much of it is not specific to PostgreSQL, but in fact hardware considerations and testing that are pertinent to most relational databases. In that sense I wouldn't limit my recommendation to just PostgreSQL, but also to anyone using a relational database on Unix/Linux for a high load project.

The PostgreSQL 9 High Performance book isn't going to teach you too much about writing better queries,day to day management (which is more of the focus of the Admin Book), or how to load data etc, but it will tell you how to determine when your database is under stress or your hardware is failing and adversely affecting your queries and what is causing that stress. It will also provide rules of thumb as to how to pick the best hardware for your project and budget, how to partition your data, what disks to put what kind of data. Various tuning and benchmarking techniques for highload testing.

Excellent book

This is an excellent book which summarizes all the ways of improving performance of the PostgreSQL database. I have more than 20 years of database experience, mostly Oracle, and almost as much Unix and Linux experience. Greg Smith showed a real out of the box thinking and explained the influence of things like the choice of file system to the database performance. An excellent book, a must have for a DBA and anybody interested in PostgreSQL.

Hedge Funds in Sub Saharan Africa

In today’s investment maze, guaranteed low return is good enough, and that explains why most investors will opt for speculation at the equity market to any other investment option. In the larger world of fund management, big enough is good enough. Most investors will opt for managed funds that are diversified to the extent that market volatilities as often as they strike, do not spell doom on the client’s investment.

Typically, a majority of high end investors in the market today are more familiar with mutual funds. Although mutual funds offer the advantage of expertise in composite selection, the return may not be guaranteed and the approach is more pegged to the long term.

Hedge funds, which are similar to mutual funds, have turned a couple of millionaires around the world into billionaires. Hedge funds are aggressively managed and use advanced investment strategies such as leverage, long, short and derivative positions in both domestic and international markets with the goal of generating high returns.

They are mostly set up as private investment partnerships open to a limited number of investors and require a very large initial minimum investment. In Kenya for instance, if a Hedge Fund firm for example was to set up a hedge fund valued at $10 million, the firm would be required to do a private placement to roll out the fund. This, as per the Kenyan laws, would require the company to place the product not to more than one hundred single applicants (whether individual or corporate). If numbers go above the one hundred, is considered public and therefore done through a secondary market with the approval of Capital Markets Authority (CMA) - the equivalence of the SEC in the US (Securities and Exchange Commission).

Hedge funds mostly comprise of the principal person investing huge amounts of cash in the fund. Typically, the principal firm will invest over 40 percent or an anchor investor puts in a similar amount. Hedge funds are very illiquid as they require investors to keep their cash for at least one year. This is however similar to the mutual funds whose investment approach is geared towards the long term.

Normally, hedge funds are not regulated as they cater for sophisticated investors. In Kenya, one need not get a license from the CMA to set up a hedge fund in the country. However, the fact that they have previously not operated in the country would call for close monitoring mainly by regulatory authorities - CMA and the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

In the United States (US), law requires that investors in a hedge fund be accredited, that is, they must earn a minimum amount of money annually and have a net worth of over $1 million along with a significant amount of investment knowledge. Think of hedge funds as mutual funds for the super rich.

In Kenya, some investment schemes claim to give a monthly yield of over 10 percent. Most of them claim to be investing in equities locally and internationally (that is yet to be confirmed). Such a formation is an ideal set up for a hedge fund. In such a case, investors would invest a minimum of say Kshs. 5,000,000. The investment would then yield over 100 percent per annum but also with the risk of -100 percent.

Hedging is typically the practice of reducing risk. The goal is always to maximize returns. The risks involved stem from embarking on a very speculative strategy. If a dealer takes Kshs.5,000,000 and trades the amount, alongside 5 other similar amounts from different clients’ money, would that be called a hedge fund? Although the trading may not be defined as a hedge fund due to lack of a legal framework, the practice qualifies in its nature.

Sadly though, hedge funds have grown at the expense of mutual funds. In Kenya for example, where we have close to 15 fund managers, the annual return for most mutual funds stands at between 12 percent and 25 percent. This is very low compared to a speculative strategy applied on an equal amount of funds. The expertise in a hedge fund is higher and degree of risk tolerance very high.

It’s because of this that experts have argued that mutual funds should be managed by people who also manage hedge funds. The motivation for this is that fund managers receive a lot more pay when funds perform very well.

As a way of comparison, mutual funds unaffiliated with hedge funds perform better than those that operate side by side with hedge funds. Please note also that side by side mutual funds generally receive significantly lower portion of low priced shares of IPO's than hedge funds.

If initiated, investors, especially the high net worth will need to seriously consider on what to opt for hedge funds or the mutual funds. Barbara H. Estridge is a retired instructor of medical technology and research associate in the College of Science & Mathematics at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. Her experience includes working at the hospital bench, teaching clinical laboratory courses, biological and biomedical research, clinical laboratory management, and more.

Anna P. Reynolds is a retired instructor of medical technology and a research coordinator at the College of Agriculture at Auburn University. She taught both hospital and university Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Technician, and Medical Laboratory Assistant programs. Her experience includes clinical and research experience in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, parasitology, and immunology.

Super Student Friendly I Loved It

Originally was going to buy this book on campus - until I saw the $175 price tag. Thankfully I found it here for a great price and completely new. The book arrived about 5 days after I ordered it and I love it. Aside from the in depth text, they offer great chapter review questions straight from the AMT exam. Great for anyone studying medical lab assisting even medical technologist.

Not just for English classes

Although I bought this book for my spring (2011) English class, I read lots of articles, essays and short stories that are in this text- without the prof even asking us to. Unheard of! I will not re-sell this book, I'm definitely keeping it- I haven't finished reading all that's in it yet, but I certainly will. Get this book, and share the info in it with others.

Very informative and helpful!

In “Do Talk to Strangers,” Matt Morris covers why we should avoid the age old lesson - “Don't talk to strangers” - and being talking to strangers. Morris then goes on to explain how exactly to talk to strangers in three sections: Meaningful Conversations, Small Talk, and Method to Storytelling. I found the Meaningful Conversations section to be the most helpful for me. Because of social anxiety, it's very difficult for me to know what to say, how to say it, and when to say what. This section laid it out pretty simply: What matters most is letting go of the fear of rejection. There is even an entire chapter devoted to overcoming anxiety, which was also a great help to me.

This book was full of great information! I highly recommend it to those who feel uncomfortable approaching people they don't know very well or those who have anxiety about any social interactions. However, I feel anyone could gain a lot from reading this book.

TALK TO STRANGERS!

I really enjoyed this book as it was very timely in my life as one of my goals was to get better at social interactions with other people. A friend of mine recommended I check out this book and I found it to be helpful in several ways. I like how the book was broken down into 3 main sections and I really enjoyed the material on body language as those tips were helpful. I also liked the sections he wrote on story telling and really enjoyed the tips he gave to make your stories better and more engaging. Overall this book really helped me in my quest to meet one of my personal goals and I really liked the authors writing style as well. Very interesting book with great value.

I think this book is fantastic for all those who are looking to learn how to talk to strangers. This book helps you look at people in a completely different way. If you have lack of confidence in talking to strangers on trains, buses, flights, office, or anywhere, then this book will definitely help you out. This book contains few excellent tips to get the reader learn to have good conversation and makes it a fun way to have emotional conversations with anyone. This is truly an excellent book. And I must say that Get your children to read this book, it will help them discover how to go about making your mark in life.
